Verse 1
He was a late-summer runt,
just a puff of fur and fun,
he and his sister, black-masked pair,
striped-up tails with wild young flair.
He and his sister stayed side by side,
never quarreled, just took pride,
two little shadows in the dusk,
two small hearts you couldn’t rush.
Verse 2
Then one hot night, trouble came fast,
a bully pack went racin’ past,
they pinned poor Shrimp down in the dirt,
bit his belly, caused him hurt.
He screamed so loud it split the air,
I jumped right up and ran out there,
chased those bullies back away,
and Shrimp found Saint where shadows lay.
Chorus
Oh Shrimp, hold on tight,
you’re gonna make it through the night,
when the storm rolls in and the cold winds blow,
you just lean on love and go.
Oh Shrimp, don’t give in,
little fighter, you will win,
through the rain and thunder’s hum,
God’s got plans for you, little one.
Verse 3
Then came the derecho, fierce and wide,
trees bent low on every side,
big branches cracked and roofs shook hard,
and I feared for Shrimp out on the yard.
But the next night there he came,
hurt and limpin’, still the same,
his back legs worked, but pain was clear,
and winter’s breath was drawing near.
Verse 4
So I opened up the door and said,
“Come in, little one, rest your head.”
He chose a blanket by my feet,
while I spoke soft and kept things sweet.
I laid down low so I wouldn’t loom,
kept gentle watch inside the room,
and when his mama came back near,
his sister Saint came running clear.
Chorus
Oh Shrimp, hold on tight,
you’re gonna make it through the night,
when the storm rolls in and the cold winds blow,
you just lean on love and go.
Oh Shrimp, don’t give in,
little fighter, you will win,
through the rain and thunder’s hum,
God’s got plans for you, little one.
Bridge
Winter came with snow and ice,
but we kept holdin’ to the light,
through the storms and through the fight,
through the long and lonely nights.
And God heard every prayer we sent,
through every fear and every bend,
He kept our home and kept our ground,
kept the little family around.
Verse 5
Spring came back and there they were,
two little faces in the blur,
Shrimp and Saint came running free,
like a blessing through the trees.
Then one day the sky lit bright,
two lightning bolts in purple light,
and I knew this story still had more,
more grace to carry to the shore.
Outro
Now if you pass that old red oak,
you may still hear a playful soak
of paws and laughter in the wind,
like Shrimp and Saint are back again.
Oh Shrimp, hold on tight,
you’re gonna make it through the night,
through the storm and through the hum,
God’s got plans for you, little one.
Amen.
